Tiger Woods suffered the biggest matchplay defeat of his career as Adam Scott and KJ Choi hammered him and Steve Stricker 7&6 in the Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne.

The defeat equalled the biggest-ever losing margin at the tournament.

It was the first time Woods had faced his former caddie Steve Williams, who apologised for words he admitted could be “construed as racist” this month.

Despite the loss, the United States lead 4-2 after day one of the event.

Woods and Williams, who split in June, shook hands on the first tee.

The former world number one failed to register a single birdie in the foursomes.

“They got off to a quick start, and we just couldn’t keep up,” said Woods.

“We kept falling to the wrong side of these slopes. The golf course is so difficult, it’s hard to make up shots.”

Only one other match has finished in 12 holes since the Presidents Cup began in 1994 – South Africa’s David Frost beat American Kenny Perry by the same score in 1996.

Woods and Stricker won all four of their matches in United States’ win at Harding Park two years ago. But they only hit four fairways and six greens on Thursday.

However, that would prove the only win of the day for the Internationals.

The Americans’ opening pair of Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson put the first point of the day on the board for Fred Couples’ men as they beat South African veteran Ernie Els and Japan’s Ryo Ishikawa 6&4.

Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar rallied from three down with six holes to play and won the last two holes with pars to earn an unlikely halve against Aaron Baddeley and Jason Day.

Phil Mickelson and Jim Furyk won 4&3 over Retief Goosen and Robert Allenby.

Geoff Ogilvy and Masters champion Charl Schwartzel lost a late two-hole lead and had to settle for a halve against Bill Haas and Nick Watney.

Hunter Mahan and David Toms had little difficulty in putting away the Korean duo of KT Kim and YE Yang, winning 6&5.

BANGKOK: Australia reached the final stage of Asia’s 2014 World Cup qualifying with a 1-0 win in Bangkok on Tuesday but they were made to work for their victory by a gutsy Thailand.

A second-half goal from Brett Holman was enough to give the Socceroos three points from a scrappy performance and take them through with 12 points from five games.

Australia were keen to reassert themselves after losing their 100 percent win record in Friday’s shock 1-0 defeat to Oman, but they rarely gelled against a Thai side who put on a fighting display for their fans.

A near-capacity crowd at Supachalasai National Stadium, used instead of the normal Rajamangala venue which is occupied by refugees from Bangkok’s crippling floods, provided buoyant support for the home team.

And Thailand marginally shaded the first half as Australian left-back Michael Zullo endured a torrid evening against the pace and aggression of winger Suree Sukha.

Thailand wasted two good chances to score in the first half, both coming from diagonal balls behind Zullo.

At the other end, goalkeeper Sinthaweechai Hathairattanakool was equal to anything Australia’s burly strikeforce could throw at him, saving well from two Josh Kennedy headers and calmly claiming a number of crosses under pressure.

But with 15 minutes to go, a cross from former Blackburn man Brett Emerton on the right found Holman unmarked six yards out and he made no mistake with the header.

Australia are now assured of joining Asian champions Japan, Uzbekistan and Jordan in the final round of qualifying. (AFP)

The American was one of four riders to fall at the opening bend in Valencia on 7 November.

The Ducati rider, world title winner in 2006, had a screw inserted into his fractured scaphoid bone during surgery in California.

“Everything went pretty smoothly,” Hayden said.

After wearing a brace and using a bone stimulator for four weeks, Hayden will have his wrist X-rayed again to assess its condition.

“The scaphoid is a slow-healing bone, so you don’t want to wait only to find out in January that it’s not healing correctly.

“I’m happy to get it fixed right so that I’ll be ready to go when I need to be,” he added.

Hayden expects to be fit for the first day of 2012 testing at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia on 31 January

Kambli who was an important part of the 1996 World Cup squad made this claim on an India news channel.

Kambli said he was shocked at the Indian decision to field first in the semi-final because the pitch was ideal for batting.

The Indian side which lost the semi-final to Sri Lanka was captained by Mohammed Azharuddin who was forced to retire later in his career because of his involvement in a match-fixing scandal.
